360 Degree MRI

Bahra Hospital has installed the most advanced 32 Channel MRI Machine in Mohali, Punjab. A Revolutionary development which took place in MRI technology was 360 degree imaging. So far CT Scan was doing 360 degree imaging but MRI was only doing 180 degree scanning. Whenever the patient would lie on the MRI table, a coil was put on top of the body part which was to be scanned. The MRI machine at Bahra Hospital has a coil embedded in the table. Now the data sent from the body is captured by coil below and the coil on top. This technology is highly useful in Brain and Spine MRI.

For years the development in MRI technology was focussed on increasing the magnetic strength to get clearer images. The actual problem was in a different area - Human body gives analog signals which are captured by the coils and transmitted to a digitizer located almost 12 feet away. The digitizer could not be kept in the MRI room because as soon as the data is digitized, it is stored on magnetic medium which was not possible to be kept in the MRI room due to strong magnetic field. Since analog signal loses intensity with distance, the need was to create a strong signal meaning higher magnetic field. In 2014 a new technology was developed whereby the digitizer after converting the analog signal to digital did not store it on magnetic medium but on optical cable. This brought the digitizer into the MRI room and now it is located just 4 cms away from the Magnetic coil. Thus the need to create 3 Tesla Magnetic field has become redundant and now the best MRI machines are coming with 1.5 Tesla Magnetic strength which gives very good Signal to Noise ratio.

There’s no special preparation necessary for the MRI examination. Unless our staff requests that you are not to eat or drink anything before the exam, there are no food or drink restrictions. You should continue to take any medication prescribed by your doctor unless otherwise directed. It is not allowed to wear anything metallic during the MRI examination so it would be best to leave watches, jewellery or anything made from metal at home. Even some cosmetics contain small amounts of metals, so it is best not to wear make-up. Our diagnostic department functions from 8 am in the morning to 8 pm in the evening.

MRI Tests

Brain & Spine MRI - Comprehensive head and spine examinations can be performed with dedicated programs. There are customized presets for fast scanning. The Neuro Suite also includes protocols for diffusion imaging, perfusion Neurology imaging and Functional MRI. The MRI of spine lets your doctor examine the small bones, called vertebrae, which make up your spinal column, as well as the spinal discs, spinal canal and spinal cord. MRI scans of the spine are needed when conservative treatment is not working and more aggressive back pain treatments (e.g. spinal injections or surgery) are contemplated to relieve the symptoms.

MR Angiography - Excellent MR Angiography can be performed to visualize arteries and veins with or without contrast agent. MRI Angiography is especially useful in identifying abnormalities such as aneurysms, blockage in carotid artery which can cause brain stroke, identifying arteries in the legs for endovascular surgery, very helpful in kideny transplant and diagnosing pulmonary embolism. The Non Contrast MR Angiography is extremely useful in patients with deranged Kidney Function.

MRI Joints - In orthopedics the 32 channel MRI machine at Bahra Hospital, Mohali can be used to examine bones, joints, and soft tissues such as cartilage, muscles, and tendons for injuries. The MRI scan is also helpful in identifying structural abnormalities or certain other conditions, such as tumors, inflammatory disease and congenital abnormalities. Osteonecrosis, bone marrow disease, and herniation or degeneration of discs of the spinal cord are also best visualized on MRI. MRI may be used to assess the results of corrective orthopedic procedures. Joint deterioration resulting from arthritis may be monitored by using magnetic resonance imaging.

Advanced MRI Tests

MRI Breast & Pelvis - MRI at Bahra Hospital, Mohali has dedicated breast coil for better and descriptive results. Cases especially related to breast cancer are visualized better through MR Mammography. Also MRI pelvis in cases of uterine fibroids is very useful in determining the size and the location of the fibroids enabling the gynaecologist to plan the surgery for best outcomes. Excellent soft tissue differentiation, customized protocols (e.g. with fat saturation or water excitation or silicone excitation), as well as flexible multiplanar visualization allow for fast, simple and reproducible evaluation of MR breast examinations.

Cardiac MRI - Cardiac MRI creates both still and moving pictures of your heart and major blood vessels. Doctors use cardiac MRI to get pictures of the beating heart and to look at its structure and function. These pictures can help them decide the best way to treat people who have heart problems. Cardiac MRI is also used for the patients who have kidney problems and cannot take contrast or dyes with iodine. Cardiac MRI is very common non invasive test for diagnosing damage caused to the heart muscle due to heart attack or pericarditis.

Whole Body MRI - The 32 Channel MRI at Bahra Hospital, Mohali has faciity of Whole Body MRI. Bahra Hospital, Mohali has 6 dedicated coils with MRI machine to take care of the whole body imaging. When 3 Tesla MRI came the body imaging was the biggest casualty as the Signal to Noise Ratio was very high and therefore the doctors preferred CT Scan of the Abdomen over MRI but in the latest 360 degree MRI this problem has been overcome and now the MR Imaging of the abdomen has become the preferred diagnostic modality for GI Surgeons and Physicians.
