Peptic ulcers are open sores that develop on the inside lining of your stomach and the upper portion of your small intestine. The most common symptom of a peptic ulcer is stomach pain and burning sensation in the stomach.
Peptic ulcers include:
Gastric ulcers that occur on the inside of the stomach
Duodenal ulcers that occur on the inside of the upper portion of the small intestine (duodenum)
The most common causes of peptic ulcers are infection with the H.Pylori bacteria and long-term use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Stress and spicy foods do not cause peptic ulcers. However, they can make your symptoms worse.
More severe symptoms of peptic ulcers are Vomiting or vomiting blood, black coloured stook, breathing difficulty, dizziness, unexplained weight loss and appetite changes.
One of the most commonly done test for diagnosis of Peptic Ulcers is Upper GI Endoscopy. In this test the doctor will insert a thin flexible pipe through the mouth and reaches the stomach. This pipe has a light source and a high resolution camera which send images from the stomach and the intestine. These images are seen on the computer monitor. If any ulcer is seen then the doctor takes a biopsy from there and this is sent to the lab for testing. A biopsy can also identify whether H. pylori is in your stomach lining.
Treatment for peptic ulcers depends on the cause. Usually treatment will involve killing the H. pylori bacterium if present, eliminating or reducing use of NSAIDs if possible, and helping your ulcer to heal with medication. Making changes in the diet can also help in treating peptic ulcers. Eating raw fruits and vegetables is one of the best natural treatment for the peptic ulcers. Raw food is difficult to digest and would consume all the gastric acid in the process.
